Around 10:00 a.m. local time (0000 UTC) Saturday, an Australian man died after being attacked by a shark while surfing<\/a> at Long Reef<\/a><\/span> in the Northern Beaches<\/a><\/span> region of Sydney<\/a><\/span>.\n<\/p>\n

Police said the shark was believed to have been large.\n<\/p>\n

According to UPI<\/a><\/span><\/i>, the victim lost both legs in the attack and died at the scene.\n<\/p>\n

The New South Wales Police Force said in a statement, “Two sections of a surfboard have been recovered and taken for expert examination.” Authorities said they were working to identify the species of shark involved in the incident.\n<\/p>\n

UPI<\/i>, citing the Sydney Morning Herald<\/i>, reported that the man was identified as Mercury Psillakis, 57.\n<\/p>\n

Police said that beaches between Manly and Narrabeen were closed to the public as a precaution.\n<\/p>\n
