{"id":10167,"date":"2026-01-07T12:57:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T12:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=10167"},"modified":"2026-01-07T12:57:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T12:57:33","slug":"the-u-s-is-leaving-boat-strike-survivors-to-drown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=10167","title":{"rendered":"The U.S. Is Leaving Boat Strike Survivors to Drown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">The United States<\/span> left the survivors of a recent boat strike to die at sea, formally abandoning search efforts Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Their presumed deaths are the result of attacks by U.S. forces on three boats in the Pacific Ocean on December 30. After striking one vessel and killing three civilians, crew members of the other boats, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Southcom\/status\/2006474817076330557\">according to U.S. Southern Command<\/a>, \u201cabandoned the other two vessels, jumping overboard and distancing themselves before follow-on engagements sank their respective vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unspecified number of survivors who leapt into the Pacific faced nine-foot seas and 40-knot winds, Kenneth Wiese, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard Southwest District, told The Intercept.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard called off the search for those people on Friday citing a \u201cdeclining probability of survival.\u201d A U.S. government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press, said the men are now presumed dead.<\/p>\n<p>The United States has been attacking boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/11\/17\/trump-boat-strikes-death-toll-caribbean-pacific\/\">since September<\/a>, killing at least 117 civilians in 35 attacks \u2014 including at least five people on December 30. The total death toll is now unknown, with U.S. Southern Command\u2019s latest tally of attacks and fatalities omitting known strikes and casualties.<\/p>\n<p>Experts in the laws of war and members of Congress,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/09\/10\/trump-venezuela-boat-attack-drone\/\">from both parties<\/a>, have said the strikes are illegal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/10\/10\/briefing-podcast-trump-venezuela-boat-strikes\/\">extrajudicial killings<\/a>. At least five civilians are known to have survived previous attacks: two on September 2, two on October 16, and one on October 27. The Intercept was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/09\/10\/u-s-attacked-boat-near-venezuela-multiple-times-to-kill-survivors\/\">first outlet to report<\/a>\u00a0that the U.S. military\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/12\/05\/boat-strike-survivors-double-tap\/\">killed two survivors<\/a>\u00a0of the initial boat attack on September 2 in a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/12\/23\/boat-strikes-venezuela-hegseth-bradley-legal\/\">follow-up strike<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>William Baumgartner, a retired U.S. Coast Guard rear admiral and former chief counsel of that service branch, said that while there were legal and moral distinctions between attacking the survivors of the September 2 strike and U.S. actions following the December 30 attack, the latter was still tantamount to a death sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the people jump in the water and you blow up the only thing that could possibly save their lives, that\u2019s essentially killing them,\u201d Baumgartner told The Intercept. \u201cThe expected result is essentially the same as putting a gun to their head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Southern Command did not answer questions about the number of people killed in the December 30 strike. Steven McLoud, a SOUTHCOM spokesperson, stated that \u201csince September, the Dept. of War has conducted 33 strikes on narco-terrorist vessels, resulting in 34 vessels destroyed and 115 narco-terrorist deaths.\u201d That attack count conflicts with the total of <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/11\/17\/trump-boat-strikes-death-toll-caribbean-pacific\/\">35 strikes<\/a> tallied by The Intercept and separately compiled by the boat strike trackers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/10\/29\/us\/us-caribbean-pacific-boat-strikes.html\">New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/11\/06\/a-list-of-us-military-strikes-against-alleged-drug-carrying-vessels\/\">Military Times<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/airwars.org\/conflict\/u-s-military-in-latin-america-and-the-caribbean\/\">Airwars<\/a>, a civilian harm watchdog group.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll proffered by McLoud \u2014 115 people killed \u2014 is also incorrect. U.S. Southern Command\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Southcom\/status\/2006474817076330557\">announcement<\/a> of the December 30 strike noted: \u201cThree narco-terrorists aboard the first vessel were killed in the first engagement. The survey found 63 percent of respondents support the U.S. government<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/12\/05\/boat-strike-survivors-double-tap\/\"> releasing the unedited videos <\/a>of the boat strikes, including the video of the September 2 attack.<\/p>\n<p>Following an October 16 attack on a semi-submersible in the Caribbean Sea that killed two civilians, two other men were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/10\/17\/caribbean-boat-strike-survivors-prisoners-war-navy\/\">rescued by the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0and quickly repatriated to Colombia and Ecuador, respectively. Following three attacks on October 27 that killed 15 people aboard four separate boats, a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecWar\/status\/1983164355999883548\">survivor of a strike<\/a> was spotted clinging to wreckage, and the U.S. alerted the Mexican Navy. Search teams did not find the man, and he is presumed dead.<\/p>\n<p>Southern Command refused to disclose the location of the December 30 strikes \u201cdue to operational security reasons,\u201d a departure from <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/12\/23\/boat-strikes-venezuela-hegseth-bradley-legal\/\">30 prior attacks<\/a>. Southern Command did not respond to questions about whether President Donald Trump, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, and SOUTHCOM had compromised operational security by announcing the locations of earlier strikes.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard disclosed the approximate location of the December 30 strike, noting that the War Department said people were in the water approximately 400 nautical miles southwest of the Mexico\u2013Guatemala border.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard said that it coordinated more than 65 hours of search efforts, leveraging the efforts of vessels in the region and a Coast Guard aircraft launched from Sacramento.
